Our story began on Upton Fells, a farm in Marlborough New Zealand, with a love of all things Merino.
Upton Fells was founded in 1849 by Sir William Stafford, one of early New Zealand’s most colourful characters; Scotsman, gentleman, jockey, farmer, boxer, swimmer, long distance runner, long jumper and Premier of New Zealand.
Gus Sandall is a third generation farmer at Upton Fells; his family has farmed in the Medway Valley since 1954. Gus has worked with Merino sheep in the high country all his life and knows the benefits of the Merino fibre.
“We work with Merino sheep and we live in Merino products. We wanted to share this amazing fibre with people everywhere and set out to produce the best Merino based products possible.
In 2004 we came up with the idea of a Merino sleeping bag liner. No one was making them which we thought was crazy! After trying them out in the freezing conditions of the Southern Alps, the Mountain Sack was born. Today, the liners can be found populating the North Pole to Antarctica, from K2 to India to DOC hiking huts throughout New Zealand.”
We are passionate about the environment and the beautiful country we live in. It is our aim to work in harmony with the environment so that we leave a bright future for our children.
Consequently, we are very excited to be part of Zque programme which not only ensures fibre quality is “fit for purpose” but also looks out for animal welfare, the environment and wider community: the farmers, farm workers and broader industry sustainability.
The inspiration for the Merino Blankets came following a long haul trip to England with Gus and Tineka’s three small children. The large size and light weight of the blankets have made them popular for all ages, particularly babies and the elderly.
We are very proud that our products are made in New Zealand from New Zealand Merino and we plan to keep it that way.
Enjoy!
